Development of an Interactive Multiuser Music Table
Aim: To enhance the real time experience of playing music.
Project Brief:
With the deluge of digital entertainment devices catering to mainly individualistic nature of the users, there is a need for new kinds of platforms to support sociable media interactions. This project employs medley two highly effective means of breaking the individualistic walls, namely, Entertainment and Music.
The process of choosing the features of the product involves an extensive study of the lifestyles of people in order to map their future expectations and imbue in them a feeling of arousal rather than just awe or simple excitement. Those have then been further blended efficiently with feasibly executable technological innovations.

Guide: Prof. Pradeep Yammiyavar
Nature of the Project: Degree Project
Duration: 8 months
Methodology adopted:
- Semantic modeling of various lifestyles for deriving features to be incorporated in the product, as per user expectations. Also studying the evolution of music devices from gramophone till iPod to know their features which helped them blend with the then prevalent lifestyle of the users and the ones which did not.
The following chart shows the generic evolution of various musical devices ever since the invention of gramophones. The trend followed with respect to the product properties has been used to predict the attributes of the new device of Next Generation (NexGen). Click here to see the full scaled version of this chart.
- To understand the trend followed by device features over the period of evolution of musical devices, a set of ten devices was considered for user rating on a 20 point scale. The physical features of these devices (inbuilt storage size, Device Size, Ratio of screen size with device size and Connectivity) were measured and normalized on a 20 point scale by us based on the available factual data. The intangible features (looks, Excitement in interaction, Social Aspect, Mark of status quo, Novelty and Surprise) were rated by a set of 52 users through a questionnaire hosted online.
- Correlating the consumer perceptions obtained from Lifestyle modeling chart with actual consumer purchase behaviors taken from user surveys, we developed a model of relationships between consumer aspirations and their current and future music market behavior, namely Aspiration Model.
- Taking into consideration the results of Lifestyle modeling chart, User surveys, Aspiration model, along with study of similar existing devices and traits of our focus group we decided upon the features of the product. Other aspects of the device like choice of music, development of interactive surface, mode of interaction, and technological aspects including development of a system to interpret the fed movements, were finalized and incorporated.
- After complete development of the prototype, user testing was done to evaluate its effectiveness.
Deliverables:
A full running prototype was developed and tested with users. A thesis was also submitted as a part of the project.
